The Typical Multiple Pencil Ignition Coil System

A pencil coil is best known for its incorporate electrical, mechanical and thermal isolation between the magnetic core, which is used for creating magnetic field. The engines generally use a mechanically times ignition system, and the key of this system is the distributor. Containing a rotating cam driven, a set of breaker points, a condenser and a distributor cap, the distributor is linked to the spark plugs and Pencil Ignition Coils with wires. One of the general categories of ignition coil called pencil coil, which is inserted inside the spark plug insertion hole in the cylinder head.

The typical multiple coil ignition system may have one of several different configurations. On Chrysler, Toyota and many other imports, the coils are mounted directly over the spark plugs. Many of these are the thin “pencil” style coils that extend down into recessed wells in the engine’s valve covers. a Coil-Near-Plug (CNP) setup is used because the spark plugs protrude from the side of the cylinder head and there isn’t room to mount a coil on the end of each plug. Here, the individual coils are mounted on the valve cover and attached to the plugs by short plug wires.

Another important part for an ignition coil is crank angle sensor. It is an electronic device used in an internal combustion engine to monitor the position or rotational speed of the crankshaft. This information is used by engine management systems to control ignition system timing and other engine parameters. Before electronic crank sensors were available, the distributor would have to be manually adjusted to a timing mark on the engine.

The crank sensor can be used in combination with a similar camshaft position sensor to monitor the relationship between the pistons and valves in the engine, which is particularly important in engines with variable valve timing. This method is also used to “syncronise” a four *** engine upon starting, allowing the management system to know when to inject the fuel. It is also commonly used as the primary source for the measurement of engine speed in revolutions per minute.
